Iconic LA Seafood Restaurant Son of a Gun Is Closing After 13 Years

Though Kid of a Gun did not receive honors on the level of Pet, movie critics appreciated it for its contributions to Los Angeles’s wider dining scene. “It’s beach shack food, inexpensive and delicious, dosed with warm sauce or vinegar, unpleasant to consume, not suggested to be anything more,” S. Irene Virbila, the previous Los Angeles Times restaurant critic, wrote in her one-and-a-half celebrity evaluation of the dining establishment in 2011. Then-LA Weekly dining establishment movie critic Jonathan Gold referred to as Son of a Gun “a kick-ass Florida fish residence” and called the “smoked steelhead roe with dots of maple-flavored cream and razor-thin fragments of pumpernickel salute” his favored meal.

Shook and Dotolo remain to run their name Italian American chain of Jon & Vinny’s restaurants– in Workshop City, Brentwood, Hyde Park, Beverly Hills, and the initial station on Fairfax– in addition to multiple areas of Helen’s Red wines and Cookbook Market in Larchmont, Echo Park, and Highland Park.

Kid of a Weapon opened up in February 2011, 3 years after the blockbuster launching of Shook and Dotolo’s critically acclaimed Animal. While the cooks’ very first initiative centered around shareable and meat-eating plates paired with diverse wines, Son of a Weapon’s food selection was fairly lighter and much more freewheeling in its fish and shellfish emphasis yet never short on the type of punchy touches that the “two dudes” from Ft Lauderdale were understood for.

From the first day, restaurants inclined a duo of sandwiches on the menu: The shrimp salute layered with abundant sriracha mayo and even richer slices of browned and buttered white toast was a runaway hit, while the large fried chicken sandwich came loaded with spicy slaw and pickles. Combination nautical design swiped from Dotolo’s grandfather’s garage featured greatly in the 55-seat dining establishment’s decor, full of buoys, fishing internet, and horns. Shook and Dotolo have the Beverly Grove building where Boy of Gun is located and do not have instant plans to open an additional dining establishment in its location.

“Thirteen years in the dining establishment globe resembles 100 years. We most definitely think about Boy of a Weapon a massive success,” Drank tells Eater. “We’re so pleased with what we have actually completed, exceptionally grateful for our hardworking group, and for the impressive support we’ve gotten.”
